About this puzzle
Guess the hidden 5-letter word in 6 tries. After each guess, letters turn green if they're in the right spot, yellow if they're in the word but the wrong spot, and gray if they're not in the word at all. Everyone gets the same word each day, resetting at midnight UTC. Guesses aren't checked against a dictionary, any 5-letter combination is accepted.
Each guess gives you information about all five letters at once, so a good opening guess is one that tests common letters. Words that include several vowels and frequent consonants like R, S, T, L, and N tend to reveal the most on the first try. From the second guess onward, the best approach is to use what you've learned: keep green letters in place, move yellow letters to new positions, and avoid gray letters entirely.
Repeated letters are worth keeping in mind. The answer can contain the same letter twice, and if you guess a word with a double letter, each copy gets its own color. A common mistake is assuming a yellow letter only appears once. The word guess strategy guide has more tips for solving in fewer tries.
Frequently asked questions
- Does the word change if I come back later today?
- No, today's word stays the same all day (it resets at midnight UTC, the same moment for everyone), and your guesses so far are saved so you can pick up where you left off. A new word appears tomorrow.
- What do the colors mean?
- Green means that letter is correct and in the right position. Yellow means the letter is in the word, but in a different position. Gray means the letter isn't in the word at all.
- Are my guesses checked against a dictionary?
- No, any 5-letter combination of A-Z is accepted as a guess, it doesn't have to be a real word. The feedback colors work the same either way.
- What happens with double letters?
- Each copy of a letter in your guess is scored separately. If the answer contains a letter once and you guess it twice, one copy will be marked green or yellow and the other gray, so the colors also tell you how many times a letter appears.
