About this puzzle
The classic tile-clearing logic game. Click a tile to reveal it, revealing a number that tells you how many mines are in the 8 surrounding tiles, or nothing at all if there are none nearby, which automatically clears the surrounding area. Right-click (or use flag mode on touch devices) to mark a tile you believe hides a mine. Daily Challenge gives everyone the identical board each day, so solve times are comparable on the leaderboard, with one attempt per day; Free Play is unlimited, with a random board and a guaranteed-safe opening click every time.
Minesweeper is a game of logic with a little bit of luck. Every number tells you exactly how many mines touch that tile, and comparing neighboring numbers usually reveals which tiles are safe and which must be mines. The classic example is a 1 touching only one hidden tile: that tile must be a mine. Experienced players learn a handful of patterns, like the 1-2-1 and 1-2-2-1 along a wall, that solve common situations instantly.
Occasionally a board reaches a point where no amount of logic can tell two tiles apart, and a guess is unavoidable. Good players make those guesses as late as possible and choose the tile with the best odds. - How do I flag a mine on a touchscreen?
- Use the flag-mode toggle above the board to switch taps from revealing tiles to flagging them, then tap again to switch back to revealing.
- Is the first click ever a mine?
- In Free Play, no, mines are placed only after your first click, and never on that tile or its immediate neighbors, so you always get a safe opening. Daily Challenge uses a fixed board (the same for everyone that day) with its safe opening already revealed at the center when you load the page, so every player is solving the identical layout.
- Can I retry today's Daily Challenge if I lose?
- No, Daily Challenge is one attempt per day, the same as Word Guess, since unlimited retries on a board you've already partly seen would let you memorize mine positions and post an unfairly fast leaderboard time. Free Play has no such limit.
- How do the difficulty levels differ?
- Easy is a 9×9 board with 10 mines, medium is 16×16 with 40 mines, and hard is 16×30 with 99 mines, the same board sizes used by the original Windows Minesweeper. Both Daily Challenge and Free Play offer all three.
